Sally
Russell
A natural expressionist, Sally Russell, uses
brilliant multilayered oil color to create vivid landscapes and
figures. Originally from Denver, she settled in Venice, California
where she owned a Hairstyling Salon for many years prior to
starting her artistic career. She attended Otis College of Art in
Los Angeles, along with art workshops in California. Sally’s
work has been featured in many exhibitions, and is in private
collections throughout the West.
As I look toward the white snow covered Taos Mountain, I went
to a warm space that I knew. Poppies and sunflowers filled my
canvas with red! Picturing hot summer nights I spread the red,
orange and yellow paint with abandon, starting with rich darks in
thin layers, adding thick strokes of color. Fields of warm reds,
orange and cool greens, flowers emerge, they fill the canvases
with flowers with delicious dark centers. I can’t get enough!
They dance across the canvas in a Taos Ballet of red. As the days
grow warmer, my palette turns to a cooler temperature; soft white
camellias, roses and magnolia bloom fill the space with a
different texture, yet the same. And I remember the cool white
vista of winter reaching forever. “ Sally Russell
Inspired by the intensely creative community of
artists and writers, she moved to Taos, New Mexico where she can
be seen painting en plein air and in her studio. Sally is
represented in Taos by J. Carole Art Gallery. Sally writes and
illustrates children’s books and is a columnist for Art
Talk Magazine. With her inspirational canine companion
Poukie, she writes of the Taos artists and the art scene from her
and Poukie’s point of view. In California, Sally was vice
president of the Malibu Art Association and Chairman of the annual
Weisman Museum Show for the MAA organization for two years.
