Nature
is full of complex lines, shapes, colors and texture, and
it is nature that has inspired years of study and challenged
experimentation with art materials by Atlanta artist, Judie
Jacobs. Textural materials printed into clay, complimented
by carving and drawing into the surface provide a rich textured
base to apply sumptuous color washes revealing a unique representation
of the landscape and abstract compositions.
Working with terra cotta, a plentiful
local resource, the artist carves, molds and transforms the
Georgia red earth into art objects that become a unique blend
of past and present. The textures and shapes you see are created
by hand tooling the clay with remnants of discarded articles,
such as ancient pottery shards, old pieces of lace and shells
and various objects that will make an imprint into the clay
surface. Once the design is complete and fired, an array of
colors, from rich jewel tones to soft washes are applied to
add dimension and depth to the pieces. Travels abroad have
added new dimension to her work, with studies in Italy, Greece,
Spain and France. Her most recent works on canvas and paper
are richly inspired by her journeys to Italy and France.
Judie teaches art in the Upper School
at Holy Innocents Episcopal School in Atlanta, and finds
inspiration and pride in her work with the students in developing
and guiding them in their artistic endeavors.
The artist maintains a studio at Tula
Art Center in Atlanta and is represented in Atlanta by Opus
One Gallery, The Abstein Gallery, Bobbe Gilles Gallery and
Gallery 1006 in Augusta, Georgia. She has sculptural works
