My career started at
the age of two with a jumbo pack of Crayola crayons, rendering
my first large-scale abstraction on my parents dining
room walls. As I was encouraged to explore more appropriate
mediums, I worked primarily in pencil and pastel, then as
a teenager discovered my real love, painting.
I grew up overseas in Frankfurt, Germany
and London, England. It was in Europe that I was exposed to
many different painting styles, from the Old Masters to Abstract
Expressionists. I have always been enraptured with color and
the power of a paintbrush.
I came back to the U. S. for my Bachelors
Degree, and lived, ate and breathed my fair share
of toxic fumes in the studios of Skidmore
College (Saratoga Springs, NY). With a major in Fine Arts,
department honors, and a minor in Business, I then attended
and graduated from the Portfolio Center for Advertising in
Atlanta. I have been an art director since 1990, and have
worked in large agencies such as, J. Walter Thompson in San
Francisco and BBDO in Atlanta, in addition to smaller, start-up
agencies. All the while, I continued to paint and create whenever
I could.
I particularly enjoy working in a
large format, measuring my canvas in feet rather than inches.
I use mainly acrylic paints, and often mix in charcoal and
oil stick. The overall look of my paintings range from vibrant,
intense color; to calm, monochromatic neutrals. In my purely
abstract work, my style is best identified by the use of overlapping
geometric shapes and line, letting previous layers playfully
show through. Lately, Ive been creating more and more
"abstract landscapes", my own unique interpretation
of traditional scenes, with an abstract twist. [CSD]
